WATER IN NUMBERS

Water in the world: a finite resource

More than 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but less than 1% is fit for consumption: 97% is salt water (oceans); 2% is frozen fresh water (glaciers); and 1% is drinking water.

Water in Brazil

In Brazil are 12% of all fresh water on the planet. The south, southeast and northeast regions, with more than 45% of the population, have less than 3% of the country's water resources. The northern region, with 5% of the population, concentrates 80% of the available water.

Water in the Iron Quadrangle

Canga soils and the iron formations below them are important areas of water recharge, due to their huge amount of pores, crevices, fissures, channels and cavities that function as sponges, storing rainwater - “aquifers”.

Water in Rola-Moça Mountains State Park

The Serra do Rola-Moça State Park helps to guarantee us water. It protects the Bálsamo, Barreiro, Catarina, Mutuca, Rola-Moça and Taboões springs, which contribute to the supply of the population of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. There are about 19,000,000 m3 of water annually, benefiting more than 330,000 people.

Our body is made up of about 70% water! It regulates body temperature, helps to hydrate, bring oxygen and mineral salts to the cells, in addition to eliminating toxic substances from the body through sweat and urine. Life depends on water and we all need it.
